One of the things I inherited from my father is a love for 50's and 60's rock and roll. Everything from the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly to the Animals and the Zombies. The wife tunes out most of it, disliking anything prior to the '70s but she puts up with it. After having read Eric's entry about Winston I dropped by his site and read the last post by roomie with a tear in my eye. I had never been to Winston's site and now I am sad because of that fact. I came across this lit

I just had my first listen to Beck's new album, and it sounds like he hit another homerun without even trying. The opening two tracks, "Orphans" and "Gamma Ray" sound as funky as they do simple, "Chemtrails" wanders into Caribou territory, "Modern Guilt" is a pure Beck-ism, and then right as you're getting comfortable he travels off into space for three songs ("Youthless," "Walls," "Replica") before slamming the groove hammer down ("Soul of a Man," "Profanity Prayers") and closing it

The dog days have reached full stretch in Texas. For most of the state, it?s mostly retread summer concert fare and quasi-ironic reunion tours, with a spattering of pertinent shows thrown in to break up the monotony. As usual, Austin perseveres with another consistent-if-not-spectacular roll call of performances, especially on the 25, which leaves the avid music fan to choose between Wolf Parade, Killer Mike, Aesop Rock, Health and a free show at the record store. My advice to yo

We don't need to tell you that Saturday and Sunday were overflowing with Pride - there was no escaping the spectacle, which you would have run into on foot or by car (oh those dreadfully confusing street closings...). This year's edition was deliciously colorful: Some of our favorite nudists were out and about, folks ran around in veils and bushy tails, well-heeled queens stood and waved from the middle of the street even after the parade was long gone and many a rainbow leg warme

On Saturday night, Music Editor Jennifer Maerz caught Werner Herzog's latest flick, ?Encounters at the End of the World,? at the Landmark Lumiere Theatre, and it sounded every bit as awesome as Herzog's "Wild Blue Yonder." "It?s rare that you get a director this capable of teaching you about a completely different way of life without getting overly reverent or overly judgmental. ?Encounters at the End of the World? lingered in my head and my conversations long after the movie ende

The Greek Theater in Berkeley was packed all the way back to the woodchips behind the lawn Friday night for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. It was an enjoyable two-hour show despite it being hoodie weather; a blanket of fog obscured the Campanile in the distance for most of the concert. Plant and Krauss opened the show with the first track from their Raising Sand album, ?Rich Woman.? They quickly answered the question of whether they?d be performing any Zeppelin songs with their th

Refractions 28: The Island of the Misfit Toys: New York's Avant-Garde Artists of the late 20th Century Part 1: Robert Rauschenberg Thus we cover the universe with drawings we have lived. Gaston Bachelard I had been working on a Refractions entry on the works of American contemporary artist Jasper Johns, when the news of Robert Rauschenberg passing away hit the news wires. Rauschenberg was Johns' comrade in the frontlines of the avant-garde art world. Both artists are now consid

Devo Sues Mcdonald?s Over Happy Meal ?american Idol? Figure New wave group Devo has filed a lawsuit against McDonald?s over a Happy Meal toy. According to the Associated Press, Devo says the fast-food joint didn?t ask permission to use its likeness in an American Idol-themed toy representing different music genres McDonald?s had issued ?New Wave Nigel,? a toy figure sporting a red cap that looks like an inverted flowerpot, similar to what Devo had dubbed ?energy domes? in the 1980s

Here's a wrap-up of all the great coverage you missed this week on Backbeat Online while you were digesting the news that Amy Winehouse's emphysema may end her singing career (and, eventually, her junkie career as well...). We about our ideal Denver musician "dream teams" and invited you to do the same, which several of you did. With polling finally finished, we announced the winners of the 2008 Westword Music Showcase, which generated a flurry of comments. Then Mile-High Makeo

It was hard to know what to expect from the live performance of the ?Raising Sand Revue? As named by Mr. Plant but one thing was for sure is that two of the strongest and most unique voices would be on display in full force. One a bluegrass belle, with a chilling and, at times, ethereal voice and the other a bona fide rock god who, if you closed your eyes and just heard his voice, you wouldn?t think him to be 60 years old. When their album came out last fall it was much lauded and p

This is the forecast for Redding, CA, the first stop of our 10-day (did I mentioned I have 10 DAYS OFF? OMGsqueeeeeeee!) vacation that begins tomorrow. I could very well burst into flames when exiting the car. Obviously, I don't do well in the heat, hence our decision to move to Seattle almost three years ago. Incidentally, it's going to be hot here when we're gone - a whopping 85 degrees. Now that, I can handle. Whenever Roth and I drive to California, we like to put th

VS. Some sad-ish news from the Fox yesterday: Apparently, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will not be adding a second show, nor will the existing show (which is Wednesday, September 24) be filmed for a DVD. But perhaps the worst part about this change? On that date you now have to choose between that show -- and Neko Case at the Pageant, playing solo here for the first time in over three years. Let's break it down after the jump: Plant and Krauss, "Battle of Evermore," from A
